The Long Thành Airport cargo terminal project is expected to complete the approval of technical designs, contractor selection, and auxiliary works by the fourth quarter of 2024, with construction scheduled to begin in January 2025.
The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has provided this information in a report submitted to the State Steering Committee for National Key Projects in the Transport Sector regarding the progress of critical components under Phase 1 of the Long Thành International Airport Construction Project, specifically Sub-project 3.
According to ACV, several tender packages under Sub-project 3 are currently underway. Among these, the technical design documentation for the wastewater treatment plant construction and equipment supply and installation package has been updated to reflect new technologies. The project management unit is preparing a report for submission to the investor to seek approval for implementation.
The report states that by Q4 2024, ACV will issue bidding documents, and by November 2024, it will finalize the technical design documentation and prepare for contractor selection. For the construction and equipment installation package for Cargo Terminal No. 1 and other auxiliary works, ACV is working with consultants to address feedback and finalize documentation in accordance with the requirements of the Department of Construction Investment Management under the Ministry of Transport.
The project is scheduled to commence in early 2025 and be completed within 18 months, around August 2026. For auxiliary facility construction and equipment installation packages, such as the port operation building, security inspection facilities, emergency response and fire-fighting centers, and medical centers, technical design and cost estimation have been completed and submitted to the Department of Construction Investment Management for evaluation.
As for the passenger terminal construction package, it has reached approximately 66% completion, with ongoing steel roof structure fabrication and installation, brick wall construction for the ground floor, first and second floors, and roof column installation. The construction work is expected to substantially finish by December 2025. Equipment installation and operational testing will begin in early 2026, aiming for full completion by the end of August 2026.
In late October, ACV also signed contracts for intra-port traffic infrastructure and airport technical infrastructure with a consortium of eight companies. The duration of this package is 685 days, and preparations for field commencement are being expedited.
The Long Thành International Airport Construction Project has a total investment of over VND 336,630 billion (more than USD 16 billion). Officially initiated on January 5, 2021, the project is divided into three investment phases. Phase 1 covers an area of over 2,500 hectares with an investment value of VND 114,450 billion (USD 5.45 billion). It includes one runway (Package 5.10), a passenger terminal (Package 4.6), and auxiliary facilities (connecting roads, an air traffic control tower, etc.), designed to handle 25 million passengers annually.
Phase 2 involves constructing an additional open-configured runway and a second passenger terminal to increase capacity to 50 million passengers and 1.5 million tons of cargo annually. Phase 3 will complete the remaining components to achieve a capacity of 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo annually.
