Vietnam’s Logistics Industry: Strong Growth Potential

October 31, 2024 – The second Vietnam Logistics Conference, themed “Transform to Break Through,” took place in Ho Chi Minh City, organized by Investment Newspaper. The conference was attended by Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Đỗ Thành Trung, Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Trần Thanh Hải, Director of the Inland Waterways Department of the Ministry of Transport Bùi Thiên Thu, and representatives of various regulatory agencies, business leaders, and top logistics experts.

Current Situation and Future Prospects

Despite facing many challenges such as the uncertain recovery of the global economy, increasing geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and natural disasters, the logistics sector still has significant growth potential. According to Precedence Research, the global logistics market could reach $21.91 trillion by 2033, with an annual growth rate of 9.35% from 2024 to 2033.

In Vietnam, the logistics market value was approximately $40 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at an annual rate of 14-15% by 2025. The logistics sector currently contributes about 4-5% of GDP and creates jobs for over 1 million people.

Opportunities and Challenges

Mr. Lê Trọng Minh, Editor-in-Chief of Investment Newspaper, highlighted the impressive progress of Vietnam’s logistics industry, which has become one of the fastest-growing sectors with an average growth rate of about 16% per year, contributing around 4.5% to GDP. Vietnam is benefiting from free trade agreements, its strategic location on international trade routes, and an increasingly attractive investment environment.

The government is determined to accelerate major infrastructure projects, including road, air, sea, and rail transport, and to promote digital and green transitions. However, to fully leverage these opportunities, the logistics sector needs to undergo significant transformations.

Solutions and Directions

Deputy Minister Đỗ Thành Trung pointed out that despite positive achievements, Vietnam’s logistics sector still faces several limitations in policies, infrastructure, and human resources. Logistics enterprises need to improve their operations, enhance digital transformation, and invest in new technologies to increase efficiency and competitiveness.

Mr. Đỗ Thành Trung emphasized that to develop sustainably and fully realize its potential, the logistics industry must adopt and apply new technologies, utilize the country’s inherent strengths, and capitalize on market opportunities. Close cooperation between the government and businesses is essential to addressing challenges and fostering sustainable development.
